THis is a portrait of Subcomandante Marcos, of the Zapatista resistance movement in the Chiapas region of Mexico. THey officially declared war on global capitalist take-over on January 1st, 1994---the day NAFTA was put into effect. The demands of the Zapatistas are simple: they are an indigenous group of peasants who seek democratic control over their lands, education, economy, and the general destiny of their children. They do not wish to be overrun by the dictations of the IMF or World Bank. Look them up--Subcomandante Marcos was apparently a teacher of philosophy from Mexico city who left his life there to join the resistance movement of these humble peoples. He has written and spoken extensively on their vision for the future and their struggle against submission to capitalist dictatorship.

Australia's recently signed a free trade agreement with the US aswell. Something I'm not too happy about, You'd think people would learn.

i like it.
:iconredteam:
Australia has a few too many yankee tendencies. But then again, so do most countries in the developed world. Nothing we can do but fight! ;P

Thanks for the comment!
:iconnangapanda:
right on!

ps. very jealous of your trip to Cuba. So much color and life there. It's definately on my to do list. I'm planning to relocate from Australia at the end of next year, maybe to mexico. My Friends' band has just signed a huge record deal with columbia and they're moving to LA. (to pretty much become the next RATM.) So we're taking the fight to the source, when I get my shit together I'll be there too. Though I'm looking at living in mexico, there's too many americans in the US. I dont think i could stand being a part of their culture....
:iconredteam:
Lol---good call. Mexico has less Americans ;P

If you do go live in Mexico--go to Chiapas!! And definitely go to Cuba---it is THE most incredible place--only 90 miles from the US coast and yet, so untouched by it culturally, while the lives of Cubans are affected so deeply by US policy.
What's the name of your friend's band?? They sound like they have good political/musical intentions....hehehe re-locate to the source fo' sho'. If you can--go to Cuba before Fidel Castro dies---the american hawks and vultures are flying over head just waiting for their chance to dive in and pick the country to its bones. And if you do go to Cuba--when you get home TALK to people about your trip because there are SO many uninformed people in the world. I met one canadian in cuba who thought that the trade embargo on Cuba was Cuba's idea! That CUba had an embargo against the US! LOL now what would be the point of that?? People aren't very good at thinking it seems......

But you're cool!

Thanks for the advice, Most people don't have much interest in the world beyond their own environment and TV sets. Distractive propaganda is very effective. Not many people care enough to question the bullshit that's fed to them so they live by thier assumptions. rant rant rant.....

Mates band is called Full Scale. Remember the name because i'll bet you'll hear of them within a year or two. or check em out in the meantime at [link]
also my other mates band that I've done the album artwork for (it's in my gallery)

you know The Mars Volta?
if you havent, look 'em up. You'll dig it.
:iconredteam:
Hey man,

Thanks for the cool links--I'll definitely keep my eyes open for your friend's band. hey do you have a program called SoulSeek? Its a fantastic P2P music sharing program (free, of course)...you should get it hooked up--we can trade music/etc...

Lemme know if you're interested..

p.s. see the world now--if bush gets re-elected we might be royally fucked in the nuclear holocaust sense of the word. Cheers, Meg
:iconnangapanda:
havent got soulseek, where can you get it from? (i could just look...)

nuclear? well, now that russia has announced it's own little war on terror (pre-emptive strikes included) it's not looking good. I might move to new zealand.

We have to keep in mind - the Zapatistas still need support - the autonomous communities suffer constant violence at the hands of the Mexican army and right-wing paramilitaries.
If you want to go to Mexico, you may want to become involved with a group like "Students Taking Action in Chiapas," where by you might be able to become involved in sustaining this crucial revolutionary movement.

I think it's also important that we learn from their struggle, and begin applying presure here, at the heart of global capital. Symbolic resistance is not enough, and we need to revitalize the spirit of active and meaningful struggle here and now.

Er, yup.

I like bands.
:iconcandy-:
ooh marcos <3
a pipe would be nice to have in the picture ;)

I have a friend who has been in mexico and knows a pair of zapatistas. His friend was recently tortured to death by the mexican army. I hope they will sort out things there asap.
I wolud like to travel to mexico someday but don't have any money =/

Anybody can be marcos!
